The Sustaining Congregational Excellence (SCE) program was launched in the summer of 2007. The goal is to support and strengthen congregations so they can be used by God to transform lives and communities. The program focuses on smaller congregations—100 adult professing members or less.
SCE offers two grant opportunities to churches. Technology & equipment (TE) grants are available to purchase items that assist congregational ministry. During the first several months of the program, 93 TE grants have been awarded. While the grant amounts are fairly small ($1,000), the equipment purchased can make a big difference. One grantee said, “This grant is a huge help and encouragement to our small, struggling congregation.”
Health & renewal grants are opportunities for churches to think creatively about projects that will foster congregational health. In July, 14 grants were awarded for a variety of projects including outreach, youth, and leadership training. A grant recipient shared, “We are so blessed to have been selected for this support from the SCE program. We continue to rejoice in and praise God's faithfulness to us.” Nineteen proposals were received for the December one deadline with awards announced on February one (after the writing of this article).
Two learning events for pastors and congregational leaders were held in South Dakota and Michigan during 2007. These times of mutual learning and sharing are encouraging for both the attendees and staff. Similar events will be held in Texas, British Columbia, California, Illinois, and Ontario during the first half of 2008.
